Particularly striking is the Procession of the Living Groups that Holy Thursday commemorates the Via Crucis in Marsala.
This procession has a special feature, which is to be the only one in the province of Trapani, to have maintained the original appearance of the ancient theater; In fact, the groups are made up of living and are not static characters like those of Buseto Palizzolo, but recite in period costume through the streets of the city of Marsala.
The origins of this representation by the strong popular caricature lie in the Middle Ages, when it was a habit widespread recite Bible passages before churchyards of Churches.
In the second half of the ´500 the Council of Trent forbade the representation of Christ´s Passion with actors who recite, but they were silent and motionless.
In other local entities then the characters of flesh and blood were replaced by statues of wood or paper mache as Trapani and Erice with their processions of the Mysteries, while in Marsala this ritual had to undergo new impulses, and they adapted to the conciliar principles. The procession, as we know it today took shape in 1755.
Today as then, the Brotherhood of St. Anne is responsible for organizing the event, which runs every year from the church, at around 14.00 or so, and runs through the streets of the center of Marsala, then retiring in the evening always the same church.
The procession is composed of six groups, of which 5 are animated, while the last is a simulacrum, representing the Dead Christ. It closes the procession the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, who is mourning the death of his son.
The Stations of the Cross on Holy Thursday has an epilogue the next day, which is Good Friday with the procession of the only statue of the Dead Christ and that through the streets of the city accompanied by the band.
