The Via Crucis of Buseto Palizzolo on Palm Sunday officially opened the events of Holy Week in the province of Trapani.
It was April 12, 1981, when a group of young busetani had the idea to take the old tradition of representing the Passion of Christ with living pictures, which the Council of Trent had abolished with a view of the Church´s liturgical reform during the Protestant Reformation.
Since then it renews the procession of the Mysteries, which attracts many people not only from neighboring countries, but also many tourists, who come to admire the living pictures depicting the events of the Passion of Christ to the resurrection of Jesus to the disciples of Emmaus.
Unlike the Via Crucis of Marsala, where the characters act and have a more active role, that of Buseto Palizzolo is more static, even though over the years the procession of the scheme has changed several times physiognomy, because by the eleven groups, has past to the present 16 paintings, undergoing considerable changes and additions, which however does not distort the basic idea of the event, which is unique in its kind, is included among the most important events of Holy Week in Sicily.
In 2015 the event of the Cross of Buseto Palizzolo has received "Italive" award, which is a prestigious award in the category "Living History", assigned by the Codacons, Autostrade for Italy and by Coldiretti.
The procession organized by the Confraternity of the Crucifix which care for 36 years with great faith and passion in organizing the event and engages the various members throughout the year, taking care of the selection of young volunteers, mostly inhabitants of Buseto Palizzolo, who, braving the cold and fatigue, remain motionless, faithfully interpreting the characters described in the gospels as if they were real statues.
The procession kicks off at 16 pm from the Church Santa Teresa of the Child Jesus, in Badia Village and ends at 22.30 in Piazza G. Falcone in the city center.
