On May 17, in Castellammare del Golfo, we celebrate the feast of St. Rita of Cascia, who for the occasion organizes a historical parade, which this year reaches its ninth edition.
The event is the life of St. Rita of Cascia and Castellammarese nobility in the Middle Ages, a period in which he lived Santa, who before becoming such, he lived a life full of pain and mystery, a ´very troubled existence because from a young age he has always shown a desire to take vows. This vocation was bitterly opposed by the parents, who wanted to marry a military commander.
The wedding was celebrated, and then after about 18 years of unhappy marriage with two children, her husband was killed in battle and his sons, after some time, died from an illness.
The woman was left alone, he decided to follow the will of God and took vows. This phase of his life was not without complications: in fact tradition has it that the woman was accompanied by three patron saints in the monastery, and just so, she could become a nun, living the rest of his life in prayer.
Several miracles are attributed, but the figure of St. Rita is not only loved by devotees, but also by non-believers, who celebrate the numerous in many countries of Italy; in particular Castellammare del Golfo, which organizes a procession of 110 participants, all dressed in medieval clothes. The procession is developed on the streets of Castellammare del Golfo in different groups, which represent the most important moments of the life of the saint, from childhood to death in the monastery.
Rounding out this great procession there are groups of flag-wavers, musicians and medieval stendardieri. The great show ends with the fireworks in honor of the saint.
The parade is the culmination of the festival, which has its prologue on May 16 at 19.30 with the opening of the medieval village and continue at 20.30 with the medieval dinner with dances and games.
