In the beautiful and unspoilt island of Marettimo you can admire the characteristic exhibition "Here and there by the sea", dedicated to the ancient activities of local fishermen. It could not be put to another contribution of the islanders, seeing that the practice of fishing has its roots in the early colonization of the most distant of the Egadi, that the inhabitants have always ensured the primary source of livelihood.
Ithaca - following the theories of the historian and writer Samuel Butler, who suggested here was set in the well-known poem Homer´s Odyssey - offers visitors a museum even more full than usual, despite the limited space of the premises. In this sense, and if it is true the saying "small barrel wine is good, the Museum of the Sea appears to be a little gem that gives visitors and users the opportunity to take a dip in the past, touching hands with those who were the tools and equipment used by the ancient fishermen Marettimo - players last year of a special photographic exhibition in Trapani - and to understand in detail the practices then in use.
At the Museum of the Sea, combines the past with the present with dignity, thanks to the exposure of the latest furnishings and the ability to see what has become a small library of the sea. An archive contains prints, photos, articles and reviews from the most remote to the recent ones, even telling the nineteenth-twentieth century migration of fishermen to distant lands from America to Tunisia, as far as Alaska.
Marettimo offers the visitor not only this beautiful experience: just landed, tourists will spend the visit or vacation to other important and fascinating destinations, such as Castello di Punta Troia, or the Roman houses, not to mention the extraordinary possibility of trekking and direct contact with the unspoiled nature of the island.
