ERICE CELEBRATED THE RETURN OF THE DOVES FROM THE SEA

It was held this morning in Erice, in the forecourt of the Castle of Venus, as part of the initiatives planned for the twelfth week of culture, the evocation of the ancient rite of Katagòghia, the return of the doves from the sea at the start of the beautiful season.

According to ancient legend, the temple of Venus were raised the white doves, animals sacred to the goddess, whose flight surrounded the temple throughout the year until, coinciding with the arrival of winter, they flew in North Africa . On that occasion, on October 25, was celebrated the rite of anagòghia, the rite was celebrated instead of katagòghia April 23 to mark the return of the doves in coincidence with the ancient festival of spring.

The initiative was promoted by the Public Education of the City of Erice, in collaboration with the Middle School A. De Stefano and the archaeological group Drepanon.
