We read from the site
www.processionemisteritp.it
"It's a tradition with obvious Spanish origin which has been representing almost 400 years.
The "Mysteries" are twenty artistic representations of the Passion and Death of Christ. On a shaped wood "vara" lie the sculptures, made of canvas, wood and glue, by artisans Trapani of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and representing scenes from the Gospels.

The statues are decorated with antique silver and elaborate floral arrangements, illuminated in such a way as to highlight the features of the face, the movements of pain and suffering. The "Mysteries" are eighteen, plus the two statues of Jesus and the Dead Lady of Sorrows. Each group is carried on the shoulders of not less than ten men, called "massari". Carriers give the procession one of its most important aspects: "the 'annacata". This term refers to the motion imparted to the group following the rhythms of the music played by the bands. "
