The "mattanza" is the ancient art of tuna fisheries in Favignana. It takes place by placing a maze of nets a stretch of sea that crosses along the migration routes of tuna in the Mediterranean, before the Sicilian coast and near the island of Favignana.
Tuna channeled into this trap so deadly in the end so-called "death room" where is the actual killing. The tuna fishermen, led by their "boss", the Rais, begin to lift the bottom of the chamber of death to bring tuna to the surface and, once exposed, harpoon and throw them in boats.
The Rais, with his experience, said the timing of fishing and directs this spectacle of death, enriched by the ancient work songs of fishermen of the Egadi.
All this is now history, culture and tourist attraction that it deserves an exhibition titled "Rais, Shaman of the Sea" to be held August 4, 2012 at 19.00 at the best place of all to collect an exhibition on the theme: the trap Favignana.
