A breeze from the south has characterized the start of the Rolex Middle Sea Race Saturday, October 22 from Valletta in Malta. During the fifty-mile voyage to Sicily, then the wind turned west-northwest, while the fleet sailed along the east coast of Sicily, the wind dropped to 5-10 knots.
The crews have crossed the Straits of Messina, the first and biggest challenge of the race tactic. The narrowest part of the Strait is 3.1 km in diameter with a depth of 80 meters to 800 meters, which is growing rapidly off to the south. The strait is famous for its strong tidal currents and eddies: Calculate the step with the favorable current provides a critical advantage.
Berenice, helmed by Marco Rodolfi, president of the telecommunications company TWT, then achieved Stromboli in third place and fourth place in Favignana, always ranking in Class 1 IRC.
After rounding the island of Egadi, the TWT Sailing Team is now headed towards the transition of Pantelleria, Lampedusa and then on to, in the extreme southern route. The goal is expected to Marsamxett Harbour, Valletta always, at the new headquarters of the Royal Malta Yacht Club in Ta'Xbiex.
The path, a circumnavigation of Sicily of 606 nautical miles, offers an incredible variety of scenery and weather conditions, which makes this race very challenging and fascinating.
The Rolex Middle Sea Race is organized by the RMYC in association with the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) and is sponsored by Rolex since 2002.
