In the Mediterranean there is a black coral that glows to the touch, a species that had previously been reported only in the Pacific Ocean, around 700 meters deep, along the California coast. In recent days it was the rare coral is found in the waters of San Vito Lo Capo, in western Sicily, during a research campaign on board a research vessel. The discovery is due more to the Institute for the Protection and Environmental Research (Ispra). The coral, called Saval lucifica, was found at a depth of 270 meters by a robot submarine and is distinguished from similar species, such as Saval savaglia, because it is light when stimulated by physical contact.
THE DISCOVERY - The rarest species in the group of zoantidei and had never been reported before in the Mediterranean Sea. The discovery was made during a campaign of research funded by the Ministry of Environment and targeted to the study of deep red coral populations in the archipelago of the Egadi. The campaign was attended by researchers from University Politecnica delle Marche, the University of Pisa, the universities of Naples "Parthenope" and along with researchers from Bologna ISPRA.
