"Not many people remember it but between the great fathers of jazz is a Sicilian, Nick La Rocca". Renzo Arbore speaks with passion about what Unani considered the first jazz record ever recorded, "Livery Stable Blues," written by Ray Lopez and Alcide Nunez and registered on 26 February 1917 by the Original Dixieland Jass Band (the change in the "Jazz "came later), the New Orleans group in which militated the legendary Nick La Rocca and another Sicilian, Tony Sbarbaro.

In Trapani, La Rocca and to celebrate all the other Sicilian with their instruments have contributed to the birth of jazz, there will be, 18 and 19, the third edition of the "Sicilian Festival of Traditional Jazz and Swing," presented its own by Renzo Arbore, who for the occasion will be joined by Max Paiella. In two evenings will be offered on a "journey into music," to tell the story of jazz and swing, with contributions from artists such as Lino Patruno, Jimmy La Rocca (son of Nick), David Hansen, Antonella Aprea, Poalo Belli, Mauro Carpet and many others. Within this "journey" there will be space for emerging groups with Nick La Rocca International Prize will be awarded on 19 by a jury chaired by Claudio Lo Cascio. "It 'a wonderful opportunity to tell a story that is often neglected," says Arbore, "that of a Sicilian community of settlers who have contributed to the birth of jazz and its success, the likes of The Rock, but also Louis Prima, Leon Roppolo, and in the years following Eddy Lang (whose real name was Salvatore Massaro), Joe Venuti, Tony Scott and many others. EE beautiful and compelling a story I told in a documentary I made with Riccardo Di Blasi , "From Palermo to New Orleans" and I will present during the days of this festival in Trapani. "

Jerome was in 1880 when La Rocca, Nick's dad, left Sicily in search of a better life in America. Jerome found his new home in New Orleans, the birthplace of Nick, who immediately fell in love with the music that was played in the streets and clubs, learning to play the cornet, despite the opposition of his father. In 1916, the young La Rocca joined the Johnny Stein's band, which soon became the Original Dixieland Jass (Jazz and then) band, resulting in an extraordinary career of success and what is still remembered as the traditional jazz, that of origins. "Few events in Italy dedicated to traditional jazz," says Arbore, "and that of Trapani is a beautiful opportunity to make known to many young music that is still funny, original and unique. And that has blood in his veins Italian. "
