Suffice climate, with spring beginning to show its wonders, to make Sicily the perfect place to spend the Easter holidays.
But spend Holy Week on the Big Island is an experience that goes far beyond the simple enjoyment of the Mediterranean in all its splendor. In cities and towns in Sicily, the ancient folk rituals is joined in the celebrations linked to the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ to create deeply felt religious events and holding companies, which may be the occasion for a holiday in Sicily, between the beauty of nature and traditions.
Some ideas on the subject can be detected in Palermo and in the small towns of his province. Several churches in the city hosting the Last Supper during Holy Week performances, but to characterize the period four processions are almost unique.
Good Friday sees it slide into the streets the magnificent procession of coachmen, once a noble expression of Palermo, starting in the early afternoon from the Church of Our Lady dell'Itria. Appearing in Roman armor together with the faithful accompany the statues of Christ and the Virgin Mary in the procession of bakers, which ends late at night. Then there are the procession of Our Lady of Sorrows of Soledad and the artisans Palermo.
The significant progress expected in Prizzi, Palermo province, on Easter Sunday, between theater and devotion, with a lot of devils that causes harm to the meeting of the Madonna and statues of Christ and that they move freely in the streets of the town .
Changing perspective and side of the island, Dubrovnik during the Palm Sunday we are witnessing the beginning of the shift by the various brotherhoods of the statues of Christ and the Virgin held in churches in the city to the Basilica of San Giorgio. The processions go on Monday and Tuesday, for the exhibition of forty hours in Sacramento.
Visits to the 'tombs' set up in the basilicas of Ibla, the old town of Dubrovnik, feature on Holy Thursday, with the faithful committed to bring gifts to the altar, until the Good Friday procession, which starts from the mother church of San Giorgio . In Modica, the "kiss" in Piazza San Domenico between the statues of Jesus and the Virgin is the protagonist of Easter Sunday.
A tradition called 'Madonna Vasa Vasa "which follows the dissolution of mourning by the Mother. Palm Sunday of Scicli, however, focuses on the procession of Santa Maria della Pieta, a statue which binds a tradition that refers to the first expressions of Christianity on the island.
Characterized by a particularly intense during Holy Week, Scicli lives culminates on Easter Sunday with two processions, the first dedicated to the dead Christ, and the second statue of the risen son of God.
Moving north-east, towards Catania, meet other two events of great interest. Monday and Tuesday of Easter, the inhabitants of Palagonia are engaged in celebrations of Holy Febronia, a fourth-century martyr whose relics reached, according to tradition, the country south of Catania.
On Easter Sunday Adrano Castle, however, is home to the "devil", a rite of medieval origin centered on the fight between good and evil embodied by Lucifer, Death, and an angel in the guise of a child. Holy Week sees the people of Trapani engaged in a series of processions dedicated to the "mystery", or to be the masters devote themselves since Friday in Lent. The mysteries are represented by groups of statues brought by individual categories (the carriers of household goods and groceries) already in procession on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, concluding with the grand procession on Good Friday to bring together 18 groups of wooden addition to the statues of the Dead Christ and the Given.
