Next Wednesday December 22 inaugurated "Wood, Canvas e.. sculpture Polymaterials Trapani between six hundred and nine hundred ", the new exhibition to be held at the convention center of Saint Augustine Diocesan Museum of Trapani. On display are masterpieces of Trapani, a true art, unique in the centuries that divided the production of the territory.

This is an exhibition that highlights the work of a typical expression of artistic Trapani who until recently was being infringed (and erroneously) called papier-mâché. In reality they are different materials of sculptures made of wood, canvas, glue, straw, cork, iron, etc. .... Will be a selection of works of great artistic production Trapani ranging from 600 to 800. The Museum Pepoli lent collection of crib figurines that are certainly among the most important works among those exposed. Interesting is the Sorrows of Lorenzo Curti, given by the Church of Sant'Oliva in Alcamo. From Erice, among other works, comes the beautiful "Sacred Family" of the Church of San Cataldo, recovered through a skilful restoration laboratory in the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage Trapani.

On display 22 works, accompanied by an area where it will be highlighted in the production technique of the works. The Superintendency has also set up educational displays at the Palace Pappalardo, on Via Garibaldi and a work in progress of restoration works of different materials that will be available from the school several days a week.

Trapani in the shops for several generations, many teachers who were formed to identify and develop with the sculptures of different materials a common artistic language, using simple materials, the feature had to aim at the sense of reality. The elaboration of this original technique was motivated primarily by the need to produce works of size, all-round, which were read for the processional devotion.

"For the exhibition is a selection process diachronic works to better identify the artists and workshops to illustrate the value of manufactured goods, according to their chronological evolution of their use in ritual and in appearing to represent the Church - said the director of the Diocesan Museum Precopi Anna Maria Lombardo - Trapani sculptors carved wooden heads, feet and hands that were assembled on a wooden structure on which they were modeled after materials such as straw or cork, everything was covered with linen or other fabric creating interesting patterns that were painted and fixed with special glue. The most famous expression of this technical and operational value is evidenced by the procession of the Mysteries of Trapani and Erice ".

This technique, known as' wood canvas and glue, "Trapani unites almost all the artists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Giovanni Matera, the Ciotti, Giuseppe Milanta, James Tartaglia, the Nolfi, Baldassare Pisciotta, Vito Lombardo are some of the talented sculptors working between the '600 and '700, in the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century continued on their wake Pietro Croce, Antonio Giuffrida, Giuseppe Cafiero, Dominic Li Muli.

The technique used to create sculptures of different materials Trapani was to carve wood carefully in their faces, hands, feet and body parts visible and to assemble, snap on a specially made wooden structure which was also granted the cork and / or straw to outline the anatomical shape of the body and create the volume of the statue.
The assembly of spare parts enabled the sculptor the opportunity to create works to soar into space with color were disguised the joints and the wire and the basic structures of wood and cork, and were coated with the patterned cloth and glue, drapery rhythms conquered nature which contributed to the spectacular overall effect.

The sacred mysteries of the groups of Trapani and Erice are the works that best highlight not only their extraordinary expressive power, but also uses the processional, which made them extremely useful lightweight composition of different materials. Art and technology at the service of the rituals of the faith have produced these outstanding works.

"Close to the Holy Week - Don Piero says Messana, director of the diocesan office of Cultural Heritage - A Symposium on the technique and the composition of these statues will be offered to the largest audience of tourists, from spring until the end of August, the circuit starting from the Church of Purgatory, steps from the exhibition will end in St. Augustine Church of San Giuliano in Erice.

The exhibition is the result of a synergy between the Diocesan Museum, the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and the Regional Museum Pepoli. During the exhibition the Superintendence of a visit to Trapani will open site in the conservation laboratory, will be reserved one day a week to schools who request it.

The opening date for Wednesday, December 22 will be preceded by a speech of the director of the Museum Precopi Anna Maria Lombardo at 19:00 at the Church of the College of Trapani. Will be followed by an illustration of the restoration techniques by Dr.. Thomas Guastella of the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage of Trapani. It will be the president of Friends of the Museum Pepoli, "Professor Lina Novara, to present the exhibition with a guided tour for guests at the convention center in St. Augustine.
