An event not to be missed is definitely the Sacred Representation of the Passion of the Lord, which takes place on Holy Thursday in Marsala in one of the oldest processions in Italy.
Established in 1600, the procession of the Mysteries of Marsala has its origins in the sacred representations that since the Middle Ages were presented through figurative processions with living characters and the wise organization of the Confraternity of Sant’Anna.
Today the procession represents the passion of Jesus with living characters dressed in period clothes and is divided into eight groups.
The first group of characters that opens the religious procession is preceded by a red banner with the writing S.P.Q.R.; the apostles including Judas with the thirty pieces of silver enclosed in a bag;
Followed by Christ and Herod with his entire court; Christ and Cafasso, Saint Peter, the maidservant and a figure carrying a rooster. Then we have Christ dressed in a white chlamys and Christ in the Hecce Homo version, accompanied by Pontius Pilate and the Praetorians. The station of Christ carrying the cross on his shoulders is the next one, followed by Christ crucified accompanied by children and boys dressed in Jewish clothes who mourn the death of Jesus.
It is worth mentioning the hundreds of figures who accompany the actors through the streets of the historic city center even if, originally, the procession was composed of a single group that then, in subsequent years, was enriched with other groups so as to give a better scenic representation of the drama of Christ.
The procession of the Mysteries of Marsala attracts numerous tourists and visitors to the city and passes through all the main streets of the city from the early hours of the afternoon, representing the symbol of a tradition that over the course of history has been remodeled in number and form.
Despite this, the procession of the Mysteries of Marsala still maintains intact its charm of scenic representation which, it should be emphasized, is not silent but dialogued during its progress, still expressing all its scenic tragedy.
