The procession of the Mysteries of the Mysteries of Erice may not be as renowned as the one in Trapani, but it has a long tradition behind it that deserves to be known and also experienced.
It is a much more intimate procession that winds through the streets of the village for an entire afternoon, accompanied by music and prayers that follow the sacred groups.
Compared to the Mysteries of Trapani, those of Erice are only 4 statuary groups plus two vare. Made in the 18th century by artists from Trapani with the same technique used to build the groups of the procession of the Mysteries of Trapani, during the processional stops the groups are supported on forks and move not with the characteristic "annacate" but at a faster pace also due to the impervious Erice roads, not asphalted and with the characteristic paving.
The groups carried in procession represent the Passion and Death of Jesus and tell the traditional scenes narrated by the Gospels, namely the Prayer of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Crowning with Thorns, the Flagellation, the Ascent to Calvary, Jesus in the urn and Mary of Sorrows.
Closing the procession is the Crucifix, whose workmanship dates back to the 16th century.
For those who want to attend this truly fascinating event, the appointment is at Erice vetta starting at 2:30 pm starting from the Church of San Giuliano and from there the religious procession winds through the streets of the village until 8 pm when, with the fall of the evening, the graceful rite that has been held since 1742 for the joy and devotion of many tourists and visitors ends.
