There are many collateral events to the procession of the Mysteries. To bring to life a tradition that is not only on Good Friday, the events on the theme of "Mysteries" are spread throughout the year as proof of the dual nature, religious and folkloristic, of the rite of the Via Crucis in Trapani.
Among these preparatory events for the procession we find the initiative "Letīs reveal the Mysteries: art, rites and traditions" promoted by the association Amici del Museo Pepoli and created in collaboration with the diocesan museum of San Nicola and the Church of the Holy Souls of Purgatory.
This is an event that, from March 31 to April 12, will be aimed not only at school students but also at all those tourists who wish to learn more about the history of Holy Week in Trapani through guided tours of the sacred works preserved in the two churches.
In particular, this year the church of San Nicola also enters as a destination of the route, allowing visitors to learn about some works of great historical and artistic value linked to the theme of the Passion.
Not only the sculptural groups of the procession of the Mysteries but also other less famous works, but no less valuable, such as the Christ between the two thieves attributed to the sculptor Andrea Tipa, the Ecce Homo by Giacomo Tartaglio and the group created by Domenico li Muli relating to the raising of Jesus on the cross which, in the original intentions, should have replaced the damaged group but was discarded from the procession of the Mysteries.
The visit will be enriched by various educational moments to explain to visitors the evolution that the rites of Holy Week have had over the centuries, especially in recent times with the advent of technology.
An example above all, the greater economy on candles and votive lamps to give more space to artificial light to illuminate the groups in the long night of the procession.
These are small details that however testify to the influence of time on a centuries-old procession that based its main pillar on the craftsmanship of wood, canvas and glue.
