During Lent, the Christian community experiences a time of penance marked by a series of rites that culminate on Good Friday, the day of Jesus´ passion and death, and on Easter Sunday, when Jesus, having defeated death, is finally resurrected gloriously.
Trapani, as per tradition, relives these fundamental moments of the evangelical story with the so-called scinnute of the Sacred Groups of the Mysteries, as a prologue to the actual Procession of the Mysteries.
The term scinnuta means "descent" and derives from the fact that when the Mysteries were in the ancient church of San Michele, they were positioned on niches from which, every Friday of Lent, they were lowered to be placed at the center of the altar so that the faithful could adore them.
Today, with the destruction of the church of San Michele by bombing, the new home of the Mysteries has become the church of the Holy Souls of Purgatory. With the niches no longer present, the descent becomes purely symbolic without losing its religious component.
Compared to how it was practiced in the past, the rite today has radically changed, with a simple moment of prayer and musical accompaniment with the band in the square.
Folklore and religiosity mix, attracting tourists and visitors throughout the period concerned.
The calendar includes the following events starting from the first Friday of Lent, March 7, 2025 with the scinnute of the first two groups: the Separation, by the goldsmiths´ class, and the Washing of the Feet, by the fishermen´s class.
Tuesday, March 11 is the turn of two other groups: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, by the gardeners´ class, and the Arrest by the metalworkers´ class.
We then return the following Friday with the Fall at the Cedron by the sailors´ class and Jesus before Hanna, by the greengrocers´ class.
On Tuesday, March 18, the statutory group of The Denial will be placed at the center of the altar together with the group curated by the fishmongers´ class that narrates the episode of Jesus before Herod, while on Friday, March 21, there will be the separation of the two groups of The Flagellation (the bricklayers´ and stonecutters´ class) and The Crowning with Thorns (the bakers´ class).
On Tuesday, March 25, Ecce Homo will follow, curated by the shoemakers´ class, and the Sentence by the butchers´ class, while on Friday, March 28, two other groups: The Ascent to Calvary of the People and the Spoliation, curated by the textile and clothing workers´ class.
On Tuesday, April 1, the prayer group of carpenters and painters will adore the statuary groups of The Raising of the Cross and The Wound in the Side.
On Friday, April 4th there will be the Deposition and Transport to the tomb of the salt workers class, while the events will close on Friday, April 11th with the scinnute of Jesus in the urn and of the Madonna Addolorata.
