The historic homes association of Italy is organizing the 14th edition of the National Historic Homes Day on Sunday 26 May which will allow the public to have free access to over 450 castles, villas, parks and gardens in Italy.
Our country has an invaluable cultural heritage, capable of making it the largest and most widespread museum in the world, so much so that it is envied abroad. For this reason it is important to protect and promote it to make it accessible to everyone.
In Trapani, in particular, the Bishop´s Palace can be visited, home to the prestigious G.B. library. Amico and the Tonnara Foderà di Magazzinazzi.
This event represents a unique opportunity to admire the beauties of Italy and raise public awareness of the importance of the historic homes of our country, evidence of the history of places and societies for at least 100 years.
This is in fact the minimum requirement to be classified as a historic residence as verified by a special technical commission which carries out over 500 quality checks every day to catalogue, classify and certify the standards of excellence of castles, villas and period residences.
If a given structure passes the quality controls it is registered in the National Archive which has been protecting and enhancing our historical heritage for 20 years through this quality certification.
To get some numbers: the technical commission carried out more than 1 and a half million checks and cataloged 7,660 historic homes of which only 1%, or 379 historic homes, obtained the certification of excellence.
Today, for the most part, historic homes are no longer inhabited by the aristocratic families who built them but can be used as museums or as evocative locations for special events.
Initiatives like these need initiatives capable of revitalizing small municipalities where these residences often manage to promote that form of tourism that we now call experiential.
