One of the most evocative rites of the Marsala Holy Week is certainly the Via Crucis which takes place on Holy Thursday with living characters walking through the streets of the city interpreting the scenes described by the Gospels on the Passion and death of Jesus.
The spectators, who come in large numbers to this sacred representation every year, are very impressed by the representation, especially by the falls of Jesus during the journey which, as told in the Gospel, are numerous during the ascent to Calvary.
These are also very moving scenes because they express the fatigue and pain of a man, even if he was the Son of God, before his death. But he knows that he is about to meet his father, the Lord God, and is aware that the salvation of humanity will come from this death.
This evocative rite is organized by the Confraternity of Sant´Anna which has been responsible for its representation since 1600; initially the procession was carried out by a few characters, then with the passage of time, the rite was enriched by many groups and characters who performed wearing strictly historical costumes.
The living groups that parade through the streets of the historic city center open with a brother holding the cross preceding the others with the simulacrum of Christ.
A second group is the one with the Apostles while the third is made up of children dressed as angels who diligently follow the route, accompanied by their parents along the way. The other groups follow, representing the scenes of Jesus in front of Caiaphas, Herod and Pilate and the bloody scene, which we described earlier, of the ascent to Calvary.
The procession ends with two simulacra representing the dead Jesus and Our Lady of Sorrows.
