As every year, the traditional Lenten celebrations of the Sacred Groups of the Mysteries resume, acting as a prologue to the Procession of the Mysteries on Good Friday.
Saying traditional is perhaps an understatement, because today´s shindigs that are done in the Anime Sante del Purgatorio church have nothing to do with the tradition handed down by our ancestors, on the contrary it is a completely distorted rite, which is not only done on the Friday of Lent , but the calendar drawn up by the Workers´ Union also includes Tuesday as the day of adoration of the Sacred Groups this year.
The Holy Mass which served as a corollary to the rite has also been eliminated, even if it is an addition made in the seventies, it has been replaced by a simple moment of prayer, followed outside by the band performing the musical pieces.
However, the calendar includes the following events starting from the first Friday of Lent or February 16th with the celebrations of the first two groups which are The Separation by the goldsmiths´ class and the Washing of the Feet by the fishermen´s class.
Tuesday 20 February is the turn of the group of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane curated by the gardeners class and the Arresto curated by the metallurgical class.
We then return the following Friday with the Fall at the Kedron of the class of sailors and of Jesus before Hanna of the class of greengrocers.
On Tuesday 27 February the devotees of the numerous people of the Mysteries will be able to pray under the statutory group of The Negation of the class of barbers and hairdressers and of Jesus before Herod of the class of fishmongers. On Friday 1 March two more groups and it will be the turn of The Flagellation of the class of bricklayers and stonemasons and then of The Coronation of Thorns of the class of bakers.
A few days pass and here we are on Tuesday 5 March with Ecce Homo edited by the shoemaker class and the Sentence of the butcher class.
On Friday 8 March it is the turn of two other groups: the Ascent to Calvary managed not by a real class, because it belongs to the entire people of Trapani, and the Spoliation administered by the class of textile and clothing workers.
On Tuesday 12 March, two other groups will be at the center of the altar of the Anime Sante del Purgatorio church: the Raising of the Cross and the Wound in the Side, curated respectively by the classes of carpenters and painters and decorators.
On Friday 15 March, the Deposition by the class of tailors and upholsterers and the Transport to the tomb of the class of salt workers will be at the center of the adoration of the faithful.
On Monday 18 March we enter the last week of snippets where the program becomes more intense with three appointments, where the two Madonnas who go in procession on Tuesday and Holy Wednesday, namely the Madre Pietà dei Massari and the Madre Pietà del Popolo who gives her nod on Wednesday 20 March, while the events close on Friday 22 March with the nods of Jesus in the urn and of Our Lady of Sorrows.
