The name of the place that we present today comes from the hot wind from the west. Föhn Favignana is the largest island of Egadi, west of Trapani. To look at it from above it is clear the curious shape of a butterfly with spread wings. The coastline stretching for 33 km are alternately high and low.
The island is flat and it stands on Mount St. Catherine. Favignana is rather bleak with remnants of the Mediterranean, but it is fascinating to see how the landscape will change by turning it far and wide. The summer season lasts from May to October, with high temperatures, but softened by the wind. Favignana, of course, is famous for its beaches and coves and crystal clear blue water.
At Cala Rossa is possible to admire the beauty of turquoise waters where the sea contrasts with the white walls of the surrounding tuff. The other beaches and coves are all equally beautiful and characterized by fine white sand and pink that contrasts with the blue turquoise sea oil in particular Cala Grande. At the north-west are particularly striking on the rocks and Galeotta Galera.
The tufa quarries are represented in the past along with fishing and agriculture one of the most important economic resources for the people of Favignana, and now have become places where bathers are queuing up to be able to lay the towels, day, and to dance, just inside the cave at night. One of the most famous cave is calling horse. The building of some merit Florio and some fortifications.
The undisputed king of this island is tuna. Here in the past it was the traditional slaughter of tuna fish with traps that started hunting for these huge fish which, together with tuff, were the main source of income for the islanders.
Once in Favignana is worth seeing the other Egadi. A trip to Levanzo can admire the discovery of prehistoric cave adorned the walls of the Genoese with graffiti and paintings with depictions of animals dating back to the Paleolithic and Neolithic. Great attraction of the trap that along with that of Favignana is the most important in Sicily. Marettimo Egadi that is the furthest away from the coast has a fishy depths and along its coasts open fascinating caves accessible by boat, particularly that of the Camel, the Bombs and the Manger rich in calcareous concretions. Once the seals Marettimo had chosen as their home, the man wiped out, and now all that remains is for them a statue.
