One of the events to write on the agenda in this low season is certainly the carnival in the Egadi Islands, which brings the largest number of tourists to the archipelago, contributing to the seasonal adjustment of tourism, which is so much talked about.
The origins of the Egadian carnival are very ancient and must be sought in the seventeenth century, during which various traditions were born in Sicily such as the Palermo carnival with the first historical parade of the chariot which depicted God Neptune together with the sirens who swam, according to legend, in the waters of the Egadi archipelago.
The inhabitants of these islands therefore decided, following the example of nearby Palermo, to replicate the initiative, also giving birth in this area to one of the oldest traditions that lasts at more or less long intervals up to the present day.
During the carnival period, Favignana transforms into a huge village with attractions of all kinds, which entertain young and old.
Here too there is the traditional parade of allegorical floats, to which is added the masked parade with group dances that enliven this splendid moment of celebration. There is no shortage of workshops and games for children and tastings of local food and wine specialties that are prepared only for carnival such as chiacchere and Favignana sausage.
The festivity ends with the usual folk ritual called the Rogo dei Nanni, a tradition that comes from Palermo, which the Egadine carnival is inspired by, as we said: two straw puppets brought to the square and then hung up, are burned on Shrove Tuesday , last day of carnival before Lent. It is an apotropaic rite, which in some ways makes an impression, but it is still a tradition to be respected.
When we talk about carnival in the Egadi we donīt mean only Favignana, but also the inhabitants of Levanzo and Marettimo are very busy; in particular, Marettimo organizes a parade of allegorical floats and masked balls to revive a community in mid-winter that is preparing to warm up its engines while waiting for the start of a new tourist season.
