The celebrations for the patron saint of San Vito Lo Capo return after two years of suspension due to Covid, which is precisely San Vito martyr, whose liturgical memory occurs on June 15 when summer is upon us and already the seaside town begins to swarm with tourists.
However, it is a very traditional festival that involves the religious sentiment of the residents even before a tourist event, even if the celebrations are very folkloric and legitimately attract the attention of many visitors.
Before going into detail in the program of the celebrations, we will make a quick excursus on the origins of this ancient devotion to San Vito, a young Christian native of Mazara del Vallo, which is why he is also the patron saint of this town, who suffered martyrdom on June 15, 303 during the great persecution wanted by the Emperor Diocletian.
There will be several moments of prayer that will culminate in a great Eucharistic celebration presided over by the bishop of Trapani.
As for the profane aspect of the party, there will be parades of marching bands, concerts in the square and competitions of ancient maritime culture games in the preceding days, but the highlight will be the characteristic re-enactment of the landing of San Vito; in fact, at sunset on June 15 a boat with some local fishing boats alongside will transport three costumed figures representing Santa Crescenza, San Modesto and the little San Vito personified by a child chosen by lot among the children who have made their first communion in the last year.
As soon as they land on the beach, the three costumed characters will start a fireworks display and everything takes place in a truly suggestive atmosphere, because the beach will be crowded with other figures in typical sailor costume, who will then form a procession that will direct at the Sanctuary.
With the covid restrictions this year there will be a few more precautions, but no limitation will ever diminish the great enthusiasm that is recorded on this early summer evening with two large wings of the crowd that will escort the historical procession in the center of the town.
As soon as we arrive in Piazza Santuario with the civil and religious authorities, a procession will begin which will bring the statue of San Vito martyr into the streets of the seaside village until late at night.
