The great sailing is back in Trapani with the trophy “The Florio route” scheduled from 13 to 15 May.
It is an offshore regatta, organized by the rowing club of Palermo founded by the Florio themselves, which has the flavor of historical re-enactment, because the entire competition will retrace the historical route that the ancient commercial boats of the Florio fleet made .
The Florio family were among the richest families in Italy, coming to have a fleet of ninety-nine ships, and had a business empire that ranged from chemicals to wine, from tourism to the tuna industry.
Like all great families there is a moment in which you reach the apex, from which unfortunately you go down to arrive at a gradual decline that ended with the liquidation of most of the assets due to the numerous debts that the Florio family had with the banks.
The epic of this family ended in 1957 with the death of the last descendant Ignazio Florio jr., Who died in Palermo in total apathy. Left completely alone, because over the years he had lost his wife and children, he considered himself a finished and failed man.
Returning to the sailing regatta, it will be divided into two stages, which will have Trapani, Palermo and the Egadi archipelago as a circuit. Let´s not forget that the Florio were a family of Calabrian origins, but their historical story took place in the rich Palermo while the entrepreneurial activity expanded on the island of Favignana where they managed the great tonnara of the island.
The circuit of the regatta is 115 miles long and the conclusion of the first stage will be in Trapani with the award ceremony.
