There are many cultural initiatives in the area for this Christmas and a photographic exhibition dedicated to our Heavenly Mother could not be missing, towards which Trapani nourishes a great veneration.

The exhibition, inaugurated last December 4 at the "San Rocco" Museum, is curated by the photographer Francesco Ferla and is entitled "Mater Drepanorum", one of the names our Madonna boasts for being the patron saint of Trapani, but also patroness of the entire diocese.

Francesco Ferla is a name not unknown in Trapani, because the artist in the past has distinguished himself for the great commitment made on the occasion of the city´s candidacy for the Italian Capital of Culture.

The photos on display tell us with images the great artistic wonders of the marble simulacrum jealously guarded by the Carmelites in the Sanctuary of the Annunziata, but also all the devotion of the people of Trapani, whose cult really has very ancient origins.

Dozens of books and authors tell us a lot with what devotion the faithful from Trapani and beyond venerate the Madonna of Trapani, who since 28 February 1790 is the patron saint of the city of Trapani together with St. Alberto.

Every year on the occasion of his feast which occurs on August 16 at the end of a period of preparation and prayer, which lasted 15 days, thousands of faithful, also from outside Sicily, go to Trapani and queue for long hours at the Sanctuary. of the Annunciation, to touch her only and rely on her intercession to have a grace.

During the war, the statue of the Madonna was placed in a chapel inside the Sanctuary itself to shelter it from possible aerial bombardments that could extend into that area. There he remained protected by sandbags from June 27, 1940 to July 20, 1944.

The last time the original simulacrum came out in procession dates back to 1954 and since then to preserve its integrity, it was decided not to carry it outside anymore, but this does not mean that devotion to the Madonna has never waned over the years.

Returning to the exhibition, it is possible to visit it until 9 January 2022 every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 17.00 to 20.00.
