The documentary exhibition “The Golden City - Urban Planning and Architecture in Trapani in the Thirties” was inaugurated last Friday, curated by the superintendency of the Trapani BB.CC.AA in collaboration with the Pepoli Museum.
This cultural event was supposed to take place last spring, but due to the health emergency, which forced us to stay indoors, it was not possible, but now the conditions have been created to finally open the doors to all fans of history of our city.
The exhibition reconstructs and deepens the theme of the urban and architectural transformations that the city of Trapani underwent in the period between the two world wars, but also after the last war, where due to the bombing of 1943 the entire district of S Peter was razed to the ground.
We are talking about the third air-naval bombardment of 6 April 1943, tremendous and tragic at the same time, because it caused the death of 6,000 civilians, although 70% of the population had already fled due to the previous air raids, and the destruction of 940,000 meters cubic buildings on an area of 94,000 square meters.
From the ashes of this district, the urban configuration of the historic center radically changed with the tracing of a new one, Corso Italia, which did not exist before.
The exhibition which will be open until November 17 from Tuesday to Saturday from 9 to 17.30 and on Sunday from 9.00 to 13.30, represents the fifth stage of a cultural itinerary that is affecting all of Sicily and will end in Palermo. with an exhibition that will collect all the most representative panels of the nine provinces in which the exhibition was.
As for the Trapani exhibition, it is divided into five sections (public building, private building, infrastructural works, military architecture, rural villages) and presents a significant cross-section of Trapani before the war with photographs, postcards and technical documentation of the epoch.
To recreate the atmosphere of those years, there will also be vintage cars and motorcycles on display, made available by the members of the Sartarelli Club.
