The fourth edition of the Calatafimi Segesta Festival - Dionisiache, which is an event that was born in 2015 to revitalize the ancient Greek theater of Segesta, will return next July 18 after years of cultural activities.
The last time was in 1981 and thanks to the initiative of the municipal administration of Calatafimi, in whose territory lies Segesta, we wanted to give a certain continuity to a beautiful tradition of the past.
Thanks also to the artistic direction of Nicasio Anzelmo who has reevaluated that experience with the happy intuition of the Dionysiacs and recovering the collective and aggregative dimension of a community towards the theater, because it is not a simple entertainment show, but it is a " rite ", to which an entire community participates.
Approximately 45 shows are planned according to the program, including at least 45 classical performances, some of which are represented in the early morning lights like Sophocle´s Antigone at 5 am on 26 August or at aperitif time like Medea by Euripide ( 23 August, 8.00 pm) and Plaut´s Amphitryon, which will be performed on 24-25 and 26 August.
Since the first edition, the festival has attracted the involvement of the entire community of Calatafimi with a series of initiatives such as workshops and art works, reviving the city with an increase in the number of presences of about 3,000 people for the 2015 edition to reach about 4000 people for the 2016 theater season with a tourist induced that has been created not indifferent, because the companies, who come from outside, stay in Calatafimi to set up their shows. Inside the festival there is also a section, which is dedicated to the Cendic Prize (Italian Center of Contemporary Dramaturgy), which is a prestigious award that aims to promote the promotion and dissemination of theatrical writing and the national language.
Partners of the initiative are the Teatro di Roma and the Libraries of the capital. The recognition foresees for the winner the possibility to represent the text the year following the one of conferment to the theater of Segesta.
