After 22 years of absence, some of the most valuable works by Giovan Battista Piranesi are on display, and they are etchings that Nunzio Nasi donated to the Fardelliana Library in 1904 and which can now be visited by the public as part of an exhibition, which art lovers and visitors can usually admire until June 30th.
But Who was Giovan Battista Piranesi? He was a famous engraver and architect, a great master of engraving, who worked mainly in eighteenth-century Rome under the pontificate of Clement XIII.
Piranesi was fascinated by the grandeur of Ancient Rome, and this magnificence represented it in his engravings, especially on etchings, which have come down to us.
They are tables of extraordinary artistic value, which depict classical ruins and ancient monuments of classical Rome.
Piranesi in his time was an internationally renowned artist, who gave him a great reputation and above all a great wealth, because the great Pope Clement XIII was one of his most important patrons.
Among his most prestigious assignments, in 1763 we note interventions in the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano to modify the area of the apse.
To return to the Trapani exhibition some of his major recordings, in particular 19 original prints will be hosted at the Regional Museum "Agostino Pepoli" after the last major cultural operation of about 22 years ago in which it was possible to admire such representations that are part of a collection of a much larger work that counts twenty volumes.
On that occasion an exhibition was held at Palazzo Milo, home to the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage of Trapani, and a catalog was presented to the public.
For this year´s exhibition visitors to the Pepoli museum have the opportunity to admire the etchings every day from Tuesday to Saturday, from 9.00 to 17.30 and Sunday from 9.00 to 12.30.
