On the eve of his Passion in Marsala there is the evocative rite of the Via Crucis, which over the centuries has maintained the ancient aspect of theatrical representations, ie it is not a procession with living figures who are fixed and immobile as in Buseto Palizzolo, but the characters play a role in acting and in some cases interacting with the audience.
The origins of this representation are medieval and resume the ancient popular tradition of reciting the biblical passages before the sagras of the Churches; however, the event took the forms we only know today in 1755.
The rite of the Via Crucis in Marsala winds through the streets of the old town and there are 6 groups, one of which is not animated, because it represents the simulacrum of the Dead Christ. Closes the religious procession as always Our Lady of Sorrows, which traces the city streets also on Good Friday with the execution of funeral marches of the band.
Returning to the sacred groups of the Via Crucis, the sacred representation is preceded by a trumpeter and a tambourine that in vintage costume attract the attention of visitors who already gather in the streets of the center in the morning waiting for the procession to come out early afternoon.
A curiosity: during the year the costumes used during the procession are kept inside the Civic Museum of Marsala.
