On Good Friday in addition to the procession of the Mysteries of Trapani you can also attend the evocative procession of the Mysteries of Erice, which winds along the streets of the medieval village starting at 14 with exit from the Church of San Giuliano.
This procession has quite ancient origins and must be sought in the second half of the sixteenth century, when the Council of Trent established that the representations of the Via Crucis were to be made not with characters in flesh and blood, but with statues.
The replacement with statuary groups was not immediate because it continued to represent the Passion of Christ always with the living characters, because much more appreciated, as long as the running costs were not so high as to arrange a change of gear, which induced local craftsmen to build wooden statues, which are still carried in procession today. Also characteristic of this procession was the representation of the bodily rituals of the whipping of the meat, which the Church abolished in 1851, because it was considered violent.
The Mysteries of Erice differ from those of Trapani both for the duration of the procession itself, which ends in the afternoon and in length, because the religious procession consists of only 6 vare with statutory groups, which for size are very more reduced; moreover, in those of Erice there is not the annacata, because the roads of Erice are much more steep that do not make the path easy.
The itinerary is quite short and includes the following itinerary: CHURCH OF SAN GIULIANO, VIA ROMA, VIA SAN FRANCESCO, VIA VITTORIO EMANUELE, CHURCH MOTHER, VIA CARVINI, VIA GUARRASI, PIAZZA UMBERTO I, VIA VITTORIO EMANUELE, VIA GEN . SALERNO, SAN MARTINO, VIA FONTANA, VIA GUARNOTTI, VIA ROMA, CHURCH OF SAN GIULIANO (return at 20.00).
Although the procession of the Mysteries of Erice is not as famous as that of Trapani, it calls to the summit a lot of tourists, because fascinated by the medieval village and perhaps the most distinctly religious sentiment that must distinguish each procession, especially that of Good Friday, which is not a show to show to paying spectators, but it is the representation of the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ, which deserves the respect and devotion of the faithful.
