On Holy Wednesday it is the turn of the Madonna "Pietà Pietà del Popolo" that comes out in a procession at 2.30 pm from the Church of the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

It is a ritual that is inserted between the various events in preparation for the great Good Friday procession which is precisely the procession of the Mysteries, almost as if it were a prologue, since the citizenship of Trapani already immerses itself in the great atmosphere of the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ.

The origins of this procession are very old and date back to the eighteenth century when the then bishop of Mazara del Vallo, in whose diocese was located Trapani, granted permission to the Company of St. Anna to organize the procession of the Madonna della Pietà del Popolo .

As in the Madonna dei Massari, in this case too a statue or a statue is carried in procession, but a painting depicting the face of the Madonna where all the ex-votos that the people of Trapani in a sign of devotion have offered to Our Lady during the course of the centuries. The painting dates back to the late 1600s and depicts the face of the suffering Christ in a cloth held up by an angel.

The Madonna del Popolo as devoutly is called by the Trapanesi, is very revered, because it is considered protector of deadly diseases, because in the past the picture was formerly brought to the bedside of the dying man who asked for a last comfort before moving to a better life .

Initially the painting was venerated in the church of S. Anna where it remained there until 1884 when it then had to leave it, because the subversive laws of the new Kingdom of Italy hit hard the patrimony of the Confraternities, including that of S. Anna, which expropriated the Church of S. Anna, owned by the confraternity, to be acquired as a patrimony of the State. Today it is the seat of the State Archives.

The painting moved to the nearby church of Our Lady of Sorrows and remained there until it was transferred to the present church of the Holy Souls in Purgatory from which it emerges in a procession. Before the liturgical reform of Holy Week the procession was published on Holy Thursday, but since 1956 the sacred rite has been moved on Holy Wednesday.

This appointment with the Madonna del Popolo is renewed every year and so this year will travel the streets of the historic center and as tradition in Piazza Lucatelli will take place the exchange of the candle as a sign of friendship and brotherhood with the workers of the Madonna dei Massari, exit the day before.
