On May 11, 1860 Giuseppe Garibaldi landed with his 1008 men in Marsala after departing from Quarto within the celebrated Shrine of Thousands.
This historic event represents the first step for the Unity of Italy, which after about one year would be proclaimed.
To commemorate the landing of the Thousands at Marsala, the municipal administration has prepared a schedule of ceremonies and demonstrations very rich and articulated in the light of a seasonalized tourism, which now becomes indispensable.
Under the rich calendar this year will be the second edition of the "Garibaldi Challenge Marsala", thanks to the involvement of the Marsala sailing clubs, who will participate in a regatta, officially recognized by the Italian Sailing Federation.
The basic idea behind sailing circles (Canottieri, Yacht Club, Naval League and Velico) is that of Trieste that has worked very well, since for several years more than two thousand boats have participated in the famous Barcolana race.
Basically what the organizers are aiming for in garibaldi celebrations is to implement an ambitious project that goes beyond national boundaries.
In addition to sailing, these days will be the protagonist of kitesurfing, which is a very young sports discipline because it was born in 1999 and is a variant of surf, which uses a kite that uses the wind as a propulsion and is maneuvered by the athlete on ´Water through a bar connected to the kite ("kite" in english) by thin cables.
There will be no lack of schools and simple citizens, who will be protagonists on May 12, as they will inaugurate a mural in the Sappusi neighborhood created by them.
Along with the aim of upgrading the city, the opening and the enjoyment of the charming courtyards, which are located on the XIXth of July, will be proposed, which for the occasion are enriched with ceramic plates, telling the story. One of these would have slept the same Garibaldi.
The ecclesiastical community will also play a very important role in opening the public free of charge to the famous Tapestry Museum, which houses 8 late-five Flemish tapestries that were donated in 1589 by the Marshal Antonino Lombardo, former bishop of Messina.
