On the day that the world of Christendom awaits the Passion of Christ, it takes place in the picturesque Marsala Procession of the Living Groups which has a special feature compared to the Buseto Palizzolo rite.
While maintaining the original appearance of the ancient theater, the cadres staged, are composed of living characters. Besides the actors they are not fixed and immobile, but recite in period costume through the streets of the city Lilibetana.
The origin of this representation are ancient and must be sought in the popular medieval tradition, which had the widespread habit of reciting passages from the Bible in front of churchyards of Churches; But the procession took its present form in 1755.
The rite of the Via Crucis winds through the streets of the historic center of Marsala, representing the Passion as described in the Gospels through 6 groups, 5 of which are animated. The last hand is a simulacrum, representing the Dead Christ.
As always closes the procession the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, which also runs the Good Friday procession in the city streets, accompanied by the band.
SACRED GROUPS
"Jesus with the Apostles" represents Jesus´ entry to Jerusalem and the dialogues with the apostles; "The capture of Jesus" This is the moment when Jesus is arrested by soldiers of Caiaphas; "Jesus before Herod," It is the moment when Jesus is questioned by Herod before his ministers; "Jesus before Pilate" It represents the moment when with Barabbas is subjected to selection by man which of the two should be crucified; "Jesus with the cross," It is Christ who falls under the weight of the cross; "Dead Christ" It ´a statue representing the dead Christ on a sheet carried by some girls dressed in black.
