Today we interview Anthony Sammartano who is the curator of a small but exciting art gallery in the heart of the historical center of Trapani named "Warehouse of Contemporary Art"
Why did you choose to create this art gallery in via Custonaci? After living many years in Milan I returned to Trapani with the idea of creating artistic projects related to Contemporary Art. The gallery was a natural consequence. After discussing with my partner (Franco Mazzucchelli a well-known Milanese artist), we thought that the ideal was to find a suitable location in the heart of the city. And so Custonaci is really a way that still pulsates with energy.
What difficulties have you encountered in implementing your project? This question is not a simple answer .... say that the difficulties were many, but we never demoralized. Determination to proceed with our project which is to spread knowledge of international contemporary art in the city.
You have brought the art biennial in Trapani, when various works were exhibited in the streets of the city. What do you remember about that experience pleasant and that he regrets? La Biennale di Trapani was a great experiment and have been involved over 60 artists from various countries ... .we "invaded" the historical center with many installations and sculptures, then building Cavarretta there were paintings and photographs. In a month we had only 20,000 visitors to the palace Cavarretta. For the rest I have to say that the city of Trapani and councilors were totally absent and then we suffered some damage to installations. But I would say that the results were excellent.
Return the art biennial in Trapani? Certainly, it is already in the pipeline for 2015 I hope that there is some synergy from the business world to develop it even better.
What are exposing yourself to the moment at the stores? You can admire the works of a talented artist Sue Kennington London. In addition, the exhibition was presented by Sue Hubbard, a famous English art critic who works for the Tate gallery.
What do you think of the tourism situation in Trapani. It ´a destination that is worth visiting? The would you recommend to a possible tourist? Trapani is really wonderful but handled really badly in my opinion. We have wonderful places (I think the former fish market that should go back to being a market) left practically rot ..... Tourists (at least the ones I´ve met) are happy to visit but many are disappointed by the fact that there are no important cultural events. We have to work in this field if you want to develop the city.
How do you see the art world in Trapani? Is there any way to improve it and create a marriage between art and tourism? That is, according to you, you can create tourism using art? Let´s say a few Trapani dealing with art. Tourism is hungry for art and culture Every year millions of people travel to visit a place in the world of art or attend a cultural event. We must PROGRAM OFFER and seriously. It should also focus on winter tourism exhibitions and conferences ... ..but to do this we need synergy.
Thank you for your availability. Is there anything you would like to tell users of hotel-trapani.com? Art is the lie that enables us to know the truth. It is not my ... and of Pablo Picasso.
